What to do in Luanda in one day

Luanda is not a walking city and it is not a rushing city. These are the stops that work well in twenty-four hours — and the order we do them in depends on the traffic, not on the map.

The city started here, in 1576. White walls above the bay, cannons pointed out to sea and the best overall view of Luanda. Half an hour is enough; an hour is better.

The seafront promenade the city took for itself. Best in late afternoon, when Luanda leaves work and the light hits the towers.

Set in the Casa Grande chapel, where thousands were baptised before being put on ships. It is small, it is hard, and it is the stop people remember.

A sandbar with turquoise water on one side and the bay on the other. It needs road time and a crossing, which is why it belongs in a full day rather than a half day.

Two formats

Half day or full day

Half day. Fortress of São Miguel, National Museum of Slavery and the Marginal in late afternoon. All in the same part of the city, with little road time between stops.

Full day. The same, plus Mussulo Island or the Miradouro da Lua. Those two need road time, which is why they do not fit into a half day without rushing.

Lunch, photo stops and changes of plan along the way are all part of it. The car is yours until the agreed hour.

What people ask

What can you see in Luanda in one day?
In half a day you can do the Fortress of São Miguel, the National Museum of Slavery and the Marginal without rushing. A full day adds Mussulo Island or the Miradouro da Lua, which are further out and need road time. We plan the route with you before setting off.
Is the price per person or per vehicle?
Per vehicle, per day, from 80 USD. Driver and fuel included. If there are four of you, you split the same price.
Is this a guided tour?
No. It is a vehicle with a driver at your disposal for the day, and the driver knows the city and how to get around it. If you want a certified guide, tell us when booking and we arrange one through a partner.
Can I change the route during the day?
Yes. The car is yours for the period booked. If the change means leaving Luanda we agree the adjustment on the spot — the daily rate covers mobility within the city.
Does the driver speak English?
We have drivers who speak English and Portuguese. Tell us which you prefer when booking and we confirm it in writing.
Can we go to Quiçama National Park?
You can, but it is a separate product: it is about 70 km from Luanda and has its own price. The economy vehicle only runs that route in dry weather; in the rainy season it goes in the intermediate vehicle.
Is it safe to move around Luanda?
With your own car and an in-house driver, yes — and that is exactly why most visitors choose this over an app or a street taxi. The driver knows the access roads, the traffic hours and where to park.
Can I pay in dollars or by card?
We accept payment in USD and in kwanzas. Available payment methods are confirmed when you book via WhatsApp.
